What is a fun activity I can do after reading a book with my child?
January is a great time to curl up on the couch and read a good book with your child. It has been snowing here and really cold, so finding entertaining indoor activities is a must, which led to a book activity. And so, I came up with this fun printable to use with Jan Brett’s book, The Mitten.
The basic story line of the book is the boy’s grandmother knits him snow white mittens at his request. She is afraid they will get lost in the snow. One of them does and several animals decide to make the mitten their home. Your kids will love seeing all the animals work to fit inside the mitten.
After you’ve read the book, you can print off these activity pages and do them with your toddler or preschooler! The pages are fun even if you don’t have the book, but you can also use them to help them recall different parts of the book.
The first page is a twist on the typical pre-writing activity. While this page was a little too difficult for Smiley Man, Little Bear loved it! We also looked at the book to see which animal went in the mitten first and started with that animal. He loved the idea of the maze and stayed in the lines pretty well.
The second page is a size sorting activity. I was surprised at how well Smiley Man did with this activity. We’ve done size sorting in the past, but the shape or object has always been the same. He didn’t seem to have a problem with the different sizes and animals.
The last page could work for a toddler or preschooler. Simply have them color or circle the items that weren’t in the mitten in the book. I had Smiley Man do this activity, and while he needed a little help he caught on quickly.
Reading books is such a great thing to do with your kids when weather won’t allow them to play outside. A good book activity is a great way to follow up after reading. Here are some other great books you might enjoy!
